JIMMY REID SAYS SNP CAN BE
VICTORIOUS

Jimmy Reid was the guest speaker at an SNP Trade Union Group public meeting held on Sunday 22 January in the Pearce Institute, Govan.

In a wide ranging speech Jimmy set out to explain the transition from his background in Govan and a lifetime’s involvement with the Labour movement to his support for the Scottish National Party and Independence for Scotland.

He said “Now is the time to strike out on our own. Scotland’s greatest untapped asset is the talent of its people. We should be proud of what is good about Scotland.”

When asked to explain why he left the Labour Party Jimmy responded
“When New Labour came into power we got a right wing conservative government. This is power without principles. The Labour Party is not a permanent fixture”.

Jimmy highlighted the Labour Party’s betrayal of all that the Labour movement stood for and made a clear distinction between the two.

He recalled his early days in Govan, the roots of the socialist dynamic in Govan from rent strikes through to the fight to save the Clyde shipyards and the historic 1971 UCS work-in.

He went on to question the morality of the McCrone report which deliberately underestimated the level of funds available from oil resources and pointed out that in parts of the west of Scotland people
are still living in 3rd world conditions.

Jimmy urged that trade unionists should only put their money to support organisations which publicly declared support consistent with the policies of their trades union.
